PORTUGAL - BRAGA
Braga Municipality is one of the municipalities of the Cávado sub-region in the Norte region of Portugal. Its historical name is Bracara Augusta. Braga is among the largest cities in Portugal and the largest cities in the Minho Region, ranking as the third largest. The population of the city is around 200,000.
Despite being mostly in a high and mountainous region in the north, it is only 30 km away from the ocean. The most important university in the city is the University of Minho (Universidade do Minho).
The city frequently exhibits traces of ancient times, the Middle Ages, and particularly the Roman period. Therefore, with its ancient and religious historical artifacts and architecture, it is one of the remarkable cities in Europe.
Considered one of the youngest cities in Europe, Braga has been an active city with a two-thousand-year history, assuming a central role regionally and strategically.
Due to its privileged geographical location and dynamism, Braga has played a leading role in the region's economy, culture, education, and technology from the Roman period to the present day.
Braga arouses interest as a significant destination in the tourism sector. Tourism sectors such as Religious and Cultural Tourism (two of the main interests of city visitors), Business Tourism, Seasonal City Tours, and Gastronomy promote the tourism industry.
Additionally, Braga is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site- Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary. Chosen as UNESCO's Creative City in the field of Media Arts, Braga is also competing for the title of European Capital of Culture for 2027.
BRAGA - GAZİANTEP
A Cooperation intention Agreement was signed between the cities of Gaziantep and Braga on 20.04.2022.
Gaziantep and Braga, both cities recognized as "Champion Cities" by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), officially became Sister Cities on 15.09.2022 through a ceremony held in Gaziantep.
