IRAQ - BAGHDAD

Baghdad is the capital and largest city of Iraq. Situated on both banks of the Tigris River in the Mesopotamian plain, the city is the third-largest in the Middle East after Cairo and Tehran. Summers are dry and hot, while winters are mild and cool. After World War II, the increase in oil revenues played a significant role in the development of Baghdad. The city hosts various industrial activities such as leather goods, silk and cotton weaving, brick, cement, dates, tobacco products, petroleum refineries, railway workshops, and iron and steel factories.

Baghdad possesses a Mesopotamian culture shaped around the Islamic religion and traditional Arab culture. While being a cosmopolitan society with high diversity, the city also harbors a vibrant culture. Islamic influence and Arab culture are prevalent in city architecture, music, clothing, cuisine, and lifestyle. Baghdad serves as the center for major state institutions in Iraq. Besides Baghdad University established in 1958, one of the world's oldest universities, Al-Mustansiriya University, is also located in Baghdad.

BAGHDAD - GAZIANTEP RELATIONS

There has been a long-standing trade and industry-focused relationship between the Republic of Iraq, especially Baghdad, and Gaziantep. In 2011, the Republic of Iraq established the Iraqi Consulate General in Gaziantep, strengthening existing relations further. In 2017, a 'Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation' was signed between the Baghdad Provincial Council and Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, agreeing upon mutual cooperation in various fields.

Within this framework, official efforts were initiated to establish a sister city relationship between Baghdad and Gaziantep. Approvals were obtained at the ministerial levels, and consequently, both cities signed the sister city protocol on 15.01.2023 in Baghdad.
