ÇEKYA -OSTRAVA

Ostrava takes its name from the river Ostravice, which divides the city into two parts. The word "ostry", the origin of the word Ostrava means a river that flows steeply, quickly and variably. It is the second largest metropolis after Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

The city of Ostrava was founded in 1267 and has about 300,000 inhabitants. This geographical position places Ostrava in an important triangle. In the 19th and 20th centuries the city was recognized as an important center of heavy industry.

Ostrava has managed to win the title of "Steel Heart of the Czech Republic" due to its huge coal deposits and advanced metallurgy, and especially due to the nationalization of the "Vítkovice" coal companies since 1945. While the number of employees here reached 25,000 in the second half of the 20th century, iron and steel production reached its peak in 1937 with almost twenty million tons of raw materials and products.

The city, which has a high employment rate, also receives daily labor migration from other provinces. Citizens of different provinces work in the industrial city of Ostrava and return to their own provinces at the end of the day.

On November 9, 2012, Sister City Protocol was signed between the Gaziantep and Ostrava municipalities.
